One to watch this evening:
INTER MILAN VS ATLETICO MADRID: AS IT HAPPENED
': We are up and running in Milan, Antoine Griezmann with the first kick in what should be an exciting match-up. PSV vs Borussia Dortmund is also underway.
': Inter Milan win a free kick in the middle of the park, they go short initially but quickly send a lofted cross into the box. Marcus Thuram heads towards goal but the attempt is awkward and off target.
': Thuram is through on goal but a poor touch lets him down. Jan Oblak's goal kick was a bad one and he gave the ball straight back to Inter. Nicolo Barella played the ball through to Thuram but his first touch was heavy and Oblak gets away with it.
': Atletico are coming forward for the first time, working the ball out to the wing. The cross is dealt with by Stefan De Vrij before Lautaro Martinez wins another free kick.
': Federico Dimarco receives the ball outside the box from a throw-in by the corner flag. The Italian aims for goal from long range but can't get a good connection on the strike and it goes well wide of the left post.
': Dimarco threads a nice pass through to Henrikh Mkhitaryan who bursts through the middle, he tried to lay the ball off to the left but the pass was poor. Now Atletico can counter, Samuel Lino dribbles towards the byline and his cross flashes across the face of goal. Atletico still have possession, it's come out to Lino again who lines up a shot but it curls wide.
': Barella crosses into a nice area but it's cleared. Not well enough though as Martinez regains possession and shoots. Axel Witsel blocks and it bounces off Nahuel Molina, the Inter fans shout for handball but the referee says no.
': Barella looks to be carrying a niggle, he's just been holding his knee and appears to be in some discomfort. One to keep an eye on.
': Neither side have a hold of the game yet, which is to be expected as they are both playing a 3-5-2. The side that gets control of the wide areas will be the ones to build some rhythm in attack.
': Great defending from Witsel. Inter look to be through on goal with a two-on-one but De Vrij's pass to Thuram is cut out by Witsel just in the nick of time.
': It's end to end so far but neither side have shown anything special in front of goal. It seems as though once they are close to the 18-yard box players begin to hit and hope. The crosses aren't finding their targets and the shots aren't either.
': Atletico Madrid scored 17 goals in six group stage matches this season but haven't had a sniff tonight. All 11 men are sat behind the ball when Inter have possession and the home side can't find a way through at the moment.
': Elsewhere is Europe - Donyell Malen gives Dortmund the lead against his old club; PSV 0-1 Borussia Dortmund.
': Lino comes forward for Atletico but Inter also have their entire team waiting to clear in the penalty area. Lino is forced to pass back to his defence to keep possession.
': Again the final ball ends Inter's attack, a groan is let out by the home supporters as that's all they've seen in the opening half hour. Atletico now emerge with the ball but are playing it safe by maintaining possession and not forcing the ball forward.
': Another shot over by Martinez. A long ball from Benjamin Pavard finds Thuram who nods it down to Martinez, the Argentine hits it first time on the volley but it sails over the bar. Plenty of power on the strike but no direction and Oblak watches it fly into the stands.
': Hakan Calhanoglu has been superb in recent weeks but tonight he's been slightly off the pace and is doing too much in front of goal. His heavy touch awards Atletico the ball without any hassle.
': Finally an effort on target and a good save from Oblak. Barella finds space to whip the ball into the box from the right wing. Martinez makes a brilliant run across Jose Maria Gimenez to meet the cross with a powerful header.
': Thuram intercepts Rodrigo De Paul's pass and races Witsel to the loose ball, he dismisses the Belgian with an assertive shoulder barge. Thuram looks up and finds Martinez who looks certain to score. He took too long to take the shot and it's blocked by Koke who did very well to get back. What a chance to take the lead.
': Inter give the ball away cheaply from the corner and now Atletico can counter but opt to go backwards and keep possession. Diego Simeone is furious on the touchline.
': Inter have another opportunity as Thuram breaks down the wing again. This time though Mario Hermoso got across to cut the pass out.
': Chances are coming thick and fast for Inter now and we've just seen the best one of the match. Who else but Thuram to kick-start the attack? The Frenchman exchanged passes with his strike partner Martinez before wriggling away from his marker and offloading the ball to Barella. Thuram has the final shot but it's straight at Oblak, a good move though.
': There will be one minute of added time. Thuram has been excellent this half but appears to have tweaked something.
HT: It's half-time and still goalless at the San Siro but in the final 10 minutes we finally saw a bit of action in front of goal. Inter with the best chances so far, Atletico are yet to register a shot on target. It doesn't look good for Thuram who is limping to the tunnel.
': The second half has begun and Thuram has made way for Marko Arnautovic. Atletico have also made a change, Gimenez is replaced by Stefan Savio.
': Deep cross from Molina on the right side but it floats past all his teammates and Yann Sommer. Goal kick for Inter.
': Corner for Inter, Oblak came out to clear but couldn't get it away. There's a bit of a goal-mouth scramble but it's swiftly ended as the referee awards Atletico a free-kick.
': What a chance for Inter! Mkhitaryan pokes out wide to Dimarco, it's a great cross to find Arnautovic but he goes for the spectacular and fires over the bar. I think he should have taken a touch as he had plenty of time to bring it down and pick his spot.
': Another chance for Arnautovic but it's wide again. This time it's a headed effort but it's the same result: off target.
': Yellow card for Hermoso for a foul against Barella. Saul has just come off for Alvaro Morata. Barella is back on his feet and looks like he'll continue.
': Brilliant play from Lino as he almost strolls past Matteo Darmain and into the penalty area. A quick one-two with De Paul and he had just Sommer to beat but the Brazilian got his feet muddled and missed the target. He opted for his left foot when his right seemed to be the better choice.
': Elsewhere in Europe - Luuk De Jong levels the scoreline from 12-yards. PSV 1-1 Borussia Dortmund.
': Marcos Llorente is played through on goal and pokes it towards goal but Sommer denies the Spaniard. The goalkeeper stays down after an awkward landing. He's back on his feet and ready to face the corner kick. Griezmann will take it; his whipped ball is comfortably collected by Sommer.
': HOW'S HE MISSED?! Arnautovic has to score from there. The build-up with Martinez was lovely, a cute one-two and he was in. The substitute can only have been seven yards away from goal and somehow blazes it over the bar. Should be 1-0 Inter.
': Witsel is down and requires medical attention, he's off the pitch currently but Diego Simeone isn't going to make a change.
': Double change for Atletico, Hermoso and Molina are replaced by Reinildo and Pablo Barrios.
': Inter also make a double change of their own. Carlos Augusto and Denzel Dumfries will provide some fresh legs as Darmain and Dimarco make way.
': Mkhitaryan is bought off, Davide Frattesi is his replacement.
': Instant impact from Dumfries as he creates a good chance. He drives a low cross into Arnautovic but it's bundled away by Atletico Madrid. Martinez was free on the edge of the six-yard box but didn't follow up on the ball and it's cleared by the away side.
': Arnautoivc has become the creator now as he peels off out wide. His cross is cleared but not far as Calhanoglu brings the ball down and has a go. His effort is blocked but Atletico are feeling the pressure now.
': Little bit of handbags on the far side between Lino and Dumfries as the Brazilian prevents the quick throw from being taken by Inter.
': Oblak saves Atleti again. Inter are really upping it now. Calhanoglu crosses into the box and Martinez meets it again, getting good contact on the header. Similar to his other headed chances though, no direction on it and Oblak saves.
': Griezmann is subbed off, Angel Correa comes on for the final 10-15 minutes.
': GOALLLLLL! Arnautovic the hero at the San Siro. Finally after letting chance after chance escape his grasp, the Austrian gets his goal. Reinildo and De Paul both go for the ball and miss it, allowing Martinez to drive through on goal. Oblak makes a superb save one-on-one but it falls to Arnautovic who squeezes it beyond Oblak and Lino on the line. Inter Milan 1-0 Atletico Madrid.
': So close to an instant equaliser. Atletico almost respond within a minute of conceding. Lino hits it 25 yards out and doesn't come far away, Sommer was visibly concerned there as the ball flies inches wide of the the top left corner.
': Yellow card for Savic and you have to say that's been coming, he's been very aggressive since coming on.
': Atletico are losing their heads now, Morata is the most recent player to be shown a yellow card for going down under no contact and tripping up De Vrij on the way down.
': Inter Milan's Frattesi has been shown a yellow card for fouling Lino.
': Martinez's night is over, he's worked unbelievably hard tonight. Alexis Sanchez will see out the final few minutes.
': Inter almost gift Atletico a goal. Sommer plays a terrible pass out from the back. The ball is fed into Morata who looks to shoot but he's swarmed by three Inter defenders who manage to get the ball away.
': There will be five minutes of added time. Not long for Atletico to salvage something, Inter Milan are still pushing for a second.
+2': Koke is shown a yellow card for his challenge on Barella.
+4': Augusto takes one for the team by dragging Correa down to prevent an Atletico counter, he goes in the referee's book.
FT: The San Siro erupts as Istvan Kovacs blows the final whistle, Inter have narrowly beaten Atletico Madrid and have the advantage heading into the second leg in a few weeks. In the first half we'd hardly seen anything from either side and quite frankly it was a pretty poor standard of football. But the substitute Arnautovic made the difference with his goal in the 79th minute. Third time lucky! That's all from me, thanks for following along. Goodnight!
